Herndon, Va. -- Bob McDonnell, the governor-elect of Virginia, has tabbed longtime Northern Virginia tech executive Jim Duffey as the state's new Secretary of Technology. He will succeed Len Pomata, who was appointed to the role by Governor Tim Kaine in June. Duffey is currently the president and CEO of Duff Consulting, and served as vice chair of the Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC) from 2006 through last January. He also previously spent 24 years at EDS, including three years as vice president and general manager of the firm's public sector business. "Jim will bring a strong private-sector perspective to state government and champion the issues and initiatives that are so critical to our regional and statewide technology community," said Donna Morea, chair of the NVTC. The Secretary of Technology oversees both Virginia's Center for Innovative Technology (CIT) and the Virginia Information Technologies Agency (VITA).

o New Enterprise Associates Closes $2.5 Billion Tech Fund

Chevy Chase, Md. -- New Enterprise Associates (NEA), the Chevy Chase-based venture capital firm focused on IT, healthcare and energy technology, said on Wednesday that it officially has closed its new $2.5 billion fund, which it began investing last May. The firm's 13th fund, the largest raised in the U.S. since 2007, brings NEA's total committed capital to more than $11 billion. Peter Barris, NEA's managing general partner, called the fund a "resounding vote of confidence" during an "incredibly challenging time for the venture capital industry." NEA closed its most recent fund in 2006, also at $2.5 billion.

o Bethesda-Based Lockheed Martin to Cut 1,200 Jobs

Bethesda, Md. -- Lockheed Martin, the Bethesda-based defense technology giant, said on Wednesday that it plans to eliminate about 1,200 jobs following the combination of two of its large businesses. The company said that it has combined its Maritime Systems & Sensors and Systems Integration - Owego businesses to form its new Mission Systems & Sensors (MS2) unit -- one of three within its Electronic Systems sector. The two business officially combined on Jan. 1. The affected employees are expected to be notified by early April. The cuts represent less than 1% of Lockheed's total workforce.

o McLean-Based GTT Acquires Assets of Global Capacity

McLean, Va. -- Global Telecom & Technology (GTT), a McLean-based provider of wide-area network, IP transit and mobility services, said that it will pay up to $8 million in cash to acquire certain assets of Chicago-based Global Capacity. The deal, expected to close during the first quarter, includes contracts with over 100 data transport customers that generate up to $25 million in annual revenue. The acquisition is GTT's second in a matter of weeks, following a $2.3 million deal for Denver-based WBS Connect that closed in December. "Following on the heels of the acquisition of WBS Connect, the addition of Global Capacity's customer base advances GTT’s strategy to rapidly scale our global telecom business," said Rick Calder, the president and CEO af GTT.

o Silver Spring-Based Discovery to Launch 3D Network with Sony, IMAX

Silver Spring, Md. -- Discovery Communications, the Silver Spring-based cable broadcaster, said that it will partner with Sony and IMAX to develop a dedicated 3D television network in the U.S. The news comes as sports broadcaster ESPN also has announced plans to launch a 3D TV service in conjunction with the World Cup soccer tournament this summer. Discovery, Sony and IMAX each will hold equal stakes in the 3D joint venture, hoping to drive consumer adoption of 3D televisions. Discovery's role will be to provide sales and technical support, as well as 3D rights to the content aired on its 13 U.S. networks. "By partnering with Sony and IMAX on 3D, Discovery will lead the way in revolutionizing the next-generation home viewing experience in the U.S. and around the world," said David Zaslav, the president and CEO of Discovery.

o Google Takes Target at iPhone with Launch of Nexus One "Superphone"

Mountain View, Calif. -- Taking direct aim at the iPhone, Google on Tuesday officially unveiled its first internally designed smartphone, known as the Nexus One. Manufactured by HTC, the Android-powered device -- which the company is calling its first in a new class of "superphones" -- features a 3.7-inch display, dynamic noise suppression and a superfast chipset. Built-in technology includes such perks as a voice-enabled keyboard, allowing users to speak into any text field, live wallpapers and a 3D photo gallery. Available through Google's newly launched online store, the Nexus One sells for $529 without service, or $179 with a contract through T-Mobile. The company said that it expects to add Verizon Wireless as another carrier in the near future.
